Obama Cocktail Dress
Made from campaign yard
signs cut into strips and sewn to
lining (made from a recycled sheet)
starting from the bottom and
ascending in overlapping layers to
the halter style top.

Obamanos Coat
A 1950’s style man’s vintage winter
overcoat covered with campaign door
hangers that were cut into 1.5 inch
wide strips and sewn onto three
layers of recycled canvas panels.
The panels were then hand stitched
to the coat. The sleeves are made in
five sections to allow the arms to
bend at the elbow when being worn.

Voter Swing Coat
Made from voter registration
posters (hanging on the wall in the
photo) cut into half inch wide
strips and woven together. This
“paper fabric” is adhered to
recycled canvas using an iron-on
adhesive and the finished coat
pieces are hand sewn together. Both
the collar and outer sleeves are
covered with “lace” punched and cut
from recycled voter registration
cards.

Junk Mail Fan Dress
Colorful junk mail
(catalogues, solicitations, newspaper ads) were folded into fans and sewn onto a
skirt and dress made of scrap canvas and a mantilla for the hair. The vintage
shoes are covered with old postage stamps. The inspiration for this outfit came
from the origami peacock earrings- Nancy Judd made them in 1988 when she
designed and sold origami jewelry for a summer job.

Glass Evening Gown
Approximately 12,000 pieces of crushed
glass from the City of Albuquerque Recycling Program were individually glued to
a 1930s style evening gown made from upholstery fabric remnants.
Commissioned by the
Glass Packaging
Institute.

Convertible Trashique
The jacket, skirt
and blouse are made from two different convertible soft-tops. The “faux
fur” on the lapel of the jacket is made from electrical wire. The hat is
made from a front-end mask and accented with electrical copper wire. The
purse is woven out of electrical wire and metal paper that are wound
around electrical components. Commissioned by Toyota.

Aluminum Drop Dress
Post-consumer
aluminum cans were hand cut into teardrops and circles and hand sewn
onto a 1920s flapper dress made from an old cloth shower curtain.

Plastic Bathing Beauty
Colorful number 2 HDPE post-consumer
plastic detergent bottles were cut into circles and hand-sewn onto a vintage
bathing suit and shoes.

Plastique Couture
The dress is made from a fabric called
Eco-spun which is woven from melted plastic bottles. It is covered with plastic
packaging film and accented by little circles cut from plastic detergent
bottles. The stole is knit from clear plastic bags that are pulled through to
create a soft luxurious faux fur and is lined with a white polyester satin prom
dress from a thrift store.

Faux Fur Coat
Old cassette tapes are woven
into the fabric of a thrift-store coat; discarded video tape is used to accent
the collar and cuffs. The inside of the jacket is lined with an old thrift store
prom dress.

Recycling Fiesta
The skirt, armbands and top
are made from a Target employee’s old shirt and are accented with plastic Target
bags. The jewelry is made from beads rolled out of cardboard product displays.
In addition to the bags, the headdress incorporates fruit made from cardboard
displays and a returned baseball game. The shoes were decorated with sequins.

Paper Lace Vogue
Post-consumer recycled office
paper was hand cut into an original lace design and glued to a pair of
vintage shoes, a skirt and hat made from canvas scraps. The dress is a
vintage cocktail dress from the early 1950s.

Recycled Cowgirl
This outfit is made of old phone
book pages that were woven together
and made into a skirt and vest.
Woven directories also cover the
vintage "pee-wee" cowgirl boots and
hat. CDs containing phone
directories are used to accent the
outfit.

Pop Can Couture
The dress and purse are made of canvas scraps sewn into a 1950's style
cocktail dress. Post consumer Coke cans were cut into the shapes of
leaves, petals and vines and hand sewn to the dress and purse. The
earrings and a necklace are also made from Coke cans.

from canvas remnants, a vintage purse
and pair of shoes.
